gear drive doesn't work, possible cause /solution?

Mowing Hay Today, NH489 froze up Rollers still turn PTO Shaft Still Turns Blades/Knife/Cutter Bar NOT moving Smoke was coming from gear box I checked knives and rollers for obstruction, nothing - tried turning by hand and it feels like it is locked up, any ideas why??

My brother vinny owns a JD X540 and says deck is responding slowly when raising and lowering Slower than what it had been Fluid level ok Time to drain fluid and change filter is first remedy i thought of Any other thoughts Wife thought air in line but that would chatter versus slow responding?

Well, after ordering and canceling a Kubota M9960HDC12 w/ FEL, the new NH TS6.110 made it's debut on the farm - can't wait to put her to work - sad to see Oliver 1755 leave, she was a work horse! I hope the attachment program works that I used, if not, will need some help!!!
