Just curious what compact tractors have for ownership paperwork ? I'm going to guess that it varies by state, like most everything except automobiles. A couple used units that I've looked at, the owner/seller said they had nothing for paperwork. Seems strange in a way, but again my Sullivan 185Q tow-behind compressor doesn't have anything either........

I have a delivery invoice, finance contract, warranty brochure and manuals.

I imagine a bill of sale which includes all pertinent information would do it.

Hmm......proof of ownership, good question? I don't recall getting any kind of official paperwork containing serial numbers or descriptions that would tie back to the tractor......seems that there would be a "certificate of origin" type document involved. But then again, maybe this is a good thing....a document of this type is the beginning of a trackable owner transfer system. We all know what that would have attached to it......SALES TAX collected on each transfer.

I just asked my Financial Director if we paid sales tax when we bought our tractor new.....she couldn't remember. Maybe it is time to replace my Financial Director.......nah, I've heard that those type transactions can get very expensive.....and what to heck would I do with 1/2 of a JD 2520??;)

I'm personally glad they don't have titles, at least in my state. The biggest purpose of them (in my cynical opinion) is to facilitate the collection of taxes from the non-farmers among us. In Ohio it also provides a means for notaries to collect fees, and sometimes hand them over to the county auditors. But with my tractor I got a bill of sale that listed everything I bought with all the appropriate serial numbers.

All you ever get is a bill of sale ... make sure the S.N. #'s are all correct ... and file it in a safe place.

No titles in Missouri, No license, But the tractor is taxable each and every year as personal property, so is livestock, other large farm machinery, like combines, etc.

Yes, I agree that the a BOS would do to prove you purchased it under pretense of clean ownership. However, when I started to look at financing a used tractor, the banks wanted some type of "hard" paper to show ownership and also to attach their lien to.......

I fully agree on the tax that follows every transaction with titles......and I'm sure when every tractor is sold new, there is a MSO...but those get lost overtime.

On the bold ^^^^ That's pretty funny...and yes, those types of transactions do get expensive. But if you have the best "Financial Director" for you already, then it doesn't matter.......

In this country, a tractor is considered as a road going vehicle like a car or truck. Which means it must be registered when you get it new or used. You have to pay a moderate fee once and for all, receive a registration certificate and must show a number plate on the back of the tractor. Your ownership is registered in the official data banks just like your car's so that they can send the traffic tickets to the right address, but it can prove very useful when your tractor is stolen or destroyed or less dramatically when you want to sell it. Here's the certificate for my 3520 (sorry I didn't get it out of the plastic cover).

No title in MN either, when I went to the bank they wanted the title to the tractor. I told them it did not have a title, I offered to use my truck which was paid off, but they said it wasn't necessary.

I did pay sales tax when I purchased mine, but I purchased it through a local dealer. It wasn't new when I bought it, but only used by a little old lady who cut the church lawn and plowed the lot in winter. OK maybe not a little old lady, but it was supposed to be owned by a Church. Only reason they supposedly traded it in, they got a new minister and he was a big fan of the green machines. (Mine is a Cub 7305)
