Meyer Plow for my tractor

/ Meyer Plow for my tractor #51
Thanks for the response. Any advice on how best to attach a 1/4" hose to a 3/8" coupler? I went to my local tractor supply and they didn't have a 3/8" hose to which I could attach a 1/4" couple at one end and a 3/8" at the other. And then another with the reverse setup. Seems simple enough, but hard to find...
I used a pair of these: Steel Hydraulic Adapter, 3/8 in. M x 1/4 in. F - 1810296 | Tractor Supply Company for a hydraulic setup a few months back

THAT'S IT! Thanks!

Go to Welcome to Meyer Worldwide and they show them there. The info is not real clear and you have to search them out. I found them by searching the ST series plows like I have.

Chris

Chris - Are you still happy with the setup? Today I went to JD through whom I ordered a bracket from WR Long for my FEL. I'll attach a similar Meyer plow, but the dealer warned that the plow may stick out too far and "tweak" my loader. Have you expereinced any tweaking?

Getting the FEL "tweaked" may depend on how hard you tweeted a curb or frozen chunk of snow/ice when plowing.

:welcome:
You should be just fine doing that. Would sacrifice some flow volume, but that won't harm performance.

He is right. I run my angle for the plow off the rear remotes which is 1/2" then its stepped down to 1/4" to the plow with 18' long hoses or so. No problems what so ever.

And yes, I am very happy with it still. We had a heavy winter the first year I had it and I gave it a work out.

The only failure I had, actually twice, was I broke the lift chain. Once I was driving through a customers property plowing a path to the wood pile. The snow was a 1' deep or so and I hit a log laying under the snow with the plow up in the air. It made the tractor bounce up a foot or so and the plow snapped up then back down violently snapping the chain. The other time I had the plow off the ground about 2' pushing snow banks back and it busted it. I have learned not to do either one of them things.

I now use my rear grader blade to push back the big frozen snow banks. The fluffy stuff is no problem. I had 50 hours of pushing snow on my land and my 10 or so customers and it worked great cutting my plow time in half easily via using the rear grader blade and FEL bucket.

Good luck with yours.

Chris

No problem for me. I did 50 hours of plowing last year and we had some hard snows. I do take some care to know where stuff is under the snow.

OK - Then I'm going for it. Won't be painting it this year, but if the set up works then I probably will. Thanks for your advice.

Chris,

I started my own Meyer Plow rebuild this weekend and have made it through the dis-assembly phase. Like yours, it fought me all the way!

I had to cut one of the cylinders out because the bolt was frozen to the hole. Not sure if the cylinders are good or not, will have to test them after i clean out all the old fluid.

A couple of questions for you if you don't mind.

1. how difficult was it to cut out the old moldboard? Mine has a couple of holes where it is rusted through and I am thinking of just replacing it.

2. for your replacement, did you use steel or poly? Why did you choose one or the other?

I may have some additional questions along the way, but these are the ones that come to mind immediately.

Thanks for your help.

I caught your build and its going good. I think yours is a better plow to start with than I had. Got to use mine Saturday when we got 5" of snow.

Anyway I got the moldboard off with a cutting wheel and torch. It took some time like everything else on these old plows but do not remembering it to be too tough. I had steel rolled for mine. I got prices all over the place so shop around. I made a templet out of cardboard and got it rolled and the material for $65. One place wanted $300

After cutting all the bolts and removing the plow face it was off to the sandblasters. I also made a shopping list and hit the internet, TSC, and my local hardware store.

I spent $100 on the sandblasting and another $30 on bolts and paint.

I also got new plow shoes ordered, plow markers, and trip pins for $80.

I then had to order the steel for the mount and new face. I had them make the face out of 11ga steel and they put the roll in it per my templet I supplied. For the FEL to plow adapter I use 1/4" stock and did the additions of putting on a 2" hitch receiver tube and tubes to accept another set of plow shoes if I feel they are needed later on. I have $140 in all the steel.

At this point I am into it about 10 hours of labor and $430

Chris

This may be a stupid question but where does one get steel like this? I ordered what I thought was a similar plow-mount for my loader to which I could weld Meyer plow-ready eyelets. What arrived where two separate brackets that fit my loader but that's it - no bars between them to connect the two, nothing to hook the plow to. (See attached PDF.) Looks like I'll need to manufacture it myself. The hardest part would be to make the brackets so at least I've got that done, but I'll need to find some steel and a welder to put it all together. Any interest in manufacturing another set of those cross tubes and selling them to me? :) All this to use an old plow as you have. When I'm done, I may have spent almost as much as it would to buy a new plow set-up!
