Gudday Doug,Here on the Baffle we have most of what you have except the koalas and deer but we do have the odd emu and the bloody cane toads.:mad:and our seven dogs. Our mareema kills any goannas near the house. How are things after those massive floods last year. I have also heard of panthers and other big cats but never seen any. The roos don't come near the house nor She Who MUST be obeyed's gardens because of the dogs, thankfully for that or I would hear about it constantly:laughing:.

Good to see you on here Loudo. Yeah, we got through the floods fine, mainly couldn't go anywhere. No roads open. Got real hungry as all the stuff in the freezer went off. Ditto tho the cane toads. Gotta watch our Pug with them. The other dogs know better. We have often found a snake or goanna ripped to bits by the bull mastiff. He got bit above the eye a few weeks ago. Blood everywhere but it was just a tree snake thank goodness. There are emus a few klm away but we haven't had any here yet. Our place is now quite tropical as we have palm trees and rock gardens everywhere but the roos eat/ destroy the palms. They just cut them off and leave them. Lesley had a bag of lucern chaff that they tore open and destroyed. lol . Grantham is still being totally rebuilt in a better location thanks to government land swaps etc. Very appealing area now. Haven't seen any giant rock pythons lately but they are there. There are a couple of areas I won't walk by myself. I had one that filled the bucket on the FEL a few years ago. Have you changed your tractor?
Cheers
Doug

Gudday Doug, Good to hear things are getting back to normal(whatever that is:laughing:) Our dogs have learnt not to touch toads thankfully. That was one BIG snake:eek: haven't changed tractors YET,still looking. She Who MUST asked me why do you want a bigger tractor anyhow,I said it would be faster mowing, bigger flail mower etc. but she is not convinced, saying that the one I have does the job.Maybe it was just to get me to give up the smokes, which I have done. Also on Rule's beach, about 5mins drive from home, we get the big sea turtles and leatherbacks nesting, and they are BIG!!! biggest one I have seen was about 4' across the shell. Cheers Kerry.

Well, This has been an interesting thread (for me) It seems that deer are common everywhere, snakes, foxes, possums, etc but so many things we don't have in Australia (and pleased about too) like groundhogs, Bears, squirrels, chipmunks, coyote (dingo?) bobcats, mountain lions, Skunks, racoons, moose, gophers, voles, (whatever they are) otters, chiggers (I think they are tiny bitey things) Bison and cougars.
I am pleased about that.... lol
There are also many breeds of snake we don't have but we have plenty of our own nasty ones. We do have scorpions and they make you sick if you get stung. The bullants (soldier or jumping) have made me quite sick and I don't want to get stung by another one. Real fierce mongrels. About the only other thing the really hurts is the paper wasp and i have had bad reactions to those too. (needle time)
No-one mentioned bigfoot. We know they are about, but like the panthers here, it is hard to convince some folk. Time will prove us right. We have the yowie. (but not on my place) (I don't think)
Thanks for the contributions all. Enjoy your tractoring.

The usual for California - Deer, rabbit, skunk, raccoon, possum, coyote, gophers. Lizards, birds.

Wild turkeys. Non native, planted by F&G a few years ago and now they are all over Northern California.

No snakes or frogs any more. They were common when I was a kid.

One unique local critter on the endangered species list, Tiger Salamander.

My orchard and canyon are becoming the last refuge for all these guys as my neighbors continue to put 6 ft deer fences around their new vineyards. I count two herds of five deer each presently, and have seen as many as 18 at a time.

For unusual, a peacock that moved in in 2009 and he's still around here somewhere. Very tame and friendly, likely an abandoned pet.

Today I heard the weasel rustling in the barn. Then I heard him scrambling madly trying to get out where he fell down inside a wall that wasn't covered at the top. I took this picture then tossed down a rope for him to climb.

Hi California. I wonder if you guys have a program like we have. It is called, 'Land for Wildlife'
You can apply to have your property listed and fenced off. The only cost is that you have to erect the fencing. They supply it and appropriate signage. They come out and look your place over and then give you the go ahead if it meets their qualifications. There are no restrictions how you use your property and you can still sell it if you want to. There are some who take advantage of this of course just to get free fences. I would like to but I get sick of trees falling on my fences and am forever repairing wires and sawing up fallen trees. I bet the weasel was grateful.
