I sure can't give a definite answer but maybe some things to ponder. You probably already know all this so just take my rambling as meaning well. The large gear will have to line up and engage the pinion gear in order to line up with the axle. Then the axle might have to turn in order for the splines to line up. If there is not any way to get that gear up and lined up from the top I would advise cutting the weld and removing the bottom plate. I'm not there so don't take this as fact, just an old man's opinion.
