Here are a few pics of my rear axle apart. awaiting parts. Right side housing filled with water, left side filled with hydro fluid.

Hi Relhogh. Looks like it all needed to come apart anyways with both sides filled. In the picture of your pin hitch plate I did not see any welds holding the plate on. Maybe they are not in the picture. Only welds were the hitch to the plate which is correct. There's no holes to thread a bolt into on that plate for removal. If you can get the plate off you'll have easy access to the axle bolts. I'd be very curious if after everything is cleaned up and new parts are installed to see if the axle cover could come off without removing the axle. I'm sure with water in one side nothing wants to budge. Nice work getting it apart. Looking forward to see reassembly.

Relogh, I linked to one of your pictures to start a new thread about the differential lock. I've been looking for a clear picture for a long time. I hope this is all right.

And - that's good that you got it apart. It sounds like a jigsaw puzzle.

For tightening the axle bolt upon reassembly - I wonder if you could mount a tire and get enough leverage turning the tire to tighten the bolt properly?

Hi "d"
I finally got everything I need to put the rear end back together.
When I slid the axle in it knocked the large gear that goes on the end down in the bottom of the case .
I can't get it back in position. I fell out easy but won't fit in the slot in the main drive shaft and the differential lock shaft.
Do I need to remove the differential lok shaft to get it in place?

I sure can't give a definite answer but maybe some things to ponder. You probably already know all this so just take my rambling as meaning well. The large gear will have to line up and engage the pinion gear in order to line up with the axle. Then the axle might have to turn in order for the splines to line up. If there is not any way to get that gear up and lined up from the top I would advise cutting the weld and removing the bottom plate. I'm not there so don't take this as fact, just an old man's opinion.

The gear should just slide back into place. Mine dropped as soon as the shafts were removed. I did not disturb the lock shaft during any of my rebuild. Can you fit the gear in place without the axle shaft installed? It may take a bit of finesse to line them all up. I hate to ask again. Are you sure that plate is welded on to the bottom of the tractor? I didn't see any welds In the picture. It would make reassembly much easier.

Ok Guys
first I was able to get the pin hitch off. My mistake. I can't bend far enough to see the underside. I was relying on the photo I took. What looked like a weld was the casting. (it still looks like a weld)
What had happened was when I was pushing the axle in it knocked the large gear off into the bottom opening. I could not get it back in place so I could insert the axle. I had to drive the shaft that has the differential lock on it to the left to allow the gear to raise up in place. I still don't know how it fell out so easy to begin with.
All said an done I got the right axle and brake on. Tomorrow the left side.

Glad to hear you got it back into place. Hope the rest goes smoothly for you and your back in the drivers seat soon. Did you find out if there's any way to get the housing off without a full tear down?

I don't think so. you have to get it down to the case and axles. Those nuts on the inside are the only way to get the axle out . If I buy another 1500 I will check a few things out first.

I never knew the difference between 1500 green/red before but it look like the early one (green) might belong on the 'avoid' list. That is truly a Dumb Design, not up to the standard of the other Yanmars.

Are there many green 1500's around? (In North America). I have seen the green/red distinction in parts listings, but don't recall ever seeing an owner of one post on here before.

1500D Red is an attractive model. It's what I was looking for when I found my similar, next-size-larger YM240. I never did see a 1500D for sale locally for a long time.
