I have a 2005 JD 4320 HST tractor that won't even turn over if the temperature is freezing or below. Not sure on the exact temperature for sure??? We try to start it some mornings a just hear a click of the fuel shut-off, nothing else. No voltage getting to the solenoid. Wait till after lunch and it turns over and cranks like it should, it has done this a couple of days in a row. My first winter with this particular tractor.

Any ideas?
Any cold weather relays?
Need to warm the glow plugs up?

Thanks,

I think the battery is shot...

You can try cleaning the battery post and cables...and while you've got them disconnected, take the battery in for cold cranking amps test.

Take the battery to a location that can do a carbon arc load test. If the battery checks good, consider switching to synthetic oil. Diesel Dino oil is awful thick when cold.

It's not a battery problem, 12V is not getting from the key switch to the starter. Not for sure what could hold it out that would have to do with cold weather?

Are you sure you're getting 12v to the key switch?

The 4320 wiring harness diagram shows one LVA13729 relay. Remarks (40A NO, 30A NC, 14VDC) don't specifically identify it as the starter relay, but it's in the right amperage range. That's where I'd check first. There's only one other relay in that diagram; the 70 amp LVA13701. But the remarks link it to the glow plugs.

I agree with greg_g that it either a relay or starter solenoid problem IF the battery & cables are GOOD.. A simple fix would be to add another relay similar to what JD did on some larger utility tractors. The extra relay sends more amps to activate the starter solenoid.

I found out today that pushing in the key would warm up the glow plugs. Seems to turn over and start fine after doing this. I will check it again in the morning.

I hope that works for you...but it sure seems like a charged battery should, at least, get the engine turning (even if it's not fast enough to start the engine).
