That really is cool. Think they hit a "home run" there.

I hope it is well received by the cotton industry. The company spent many years developing and refining it. You guys wouldn't believe the efforts that were made to keep it quiet for so long. They even threw a tarp around the entire machine before shipping the prototypes to a test field. Have you ever tarped something as big as a cotton picker on a trailer? It ain't easy! I am hoping this will transform cotton harvesting as much as the 6 row head did.

I think it will...I also believe Deere has distanced itself from the entire AG field with their new line-up of 6030 & 7030 tractors, nobody offers the options and refinement that Deere currently is offering in these machines.

Eventually I am sure they will come out with 0030 series compacts, but for now the 20 series are still at the head of the field in the market as it is. The 790 & 990 go away next year (there will still be some models very similar to them with different numbers but in the same $$ range). You will also see some other changes in the smaller stuff (below 2000 series).

Will the newest 5x03 series engines meet EPA tier 3 emissions that go into effect 1-1-08? Looking around the Deere powertrain site there is no 2.9 liter engine in tier 3 line up. I saw a 2.4L and a 3.0L which I think is the engine in the 5225 and 5325.

2.9 is a three cylinder with sleeved cylinders vs the 3.0 a 5 cylinder with no sleeved cylinders. If the 3.0 ends up in the 5x03 series in place of the 2.9, long term I would rather have a sleeved engine.

My original thinking was the new 5x03 series may be very short lived with the current engine. The 5603 uses the 4.5 liter and that engine does appear in the tier 3 emissions in a couple of different configurations. One version purely mechanical injection and two others with varied amounts of electronics and common rail injection. All of my information is coming from Deere's powertrain pages. I don't know if these apply to ag applications but I would think so since ag is an 'offroad' application.

I watched the cotton picker (stripper out here) video in amazement. I still remember the braceros picking cotton by hand dragging the sack. Daddy would weigh the sack with scales his Grandad using in the 1800s. Then he got a 2 row elevator type stripper which blew the cotton into a trailer. I would throw the cotton to the back of the trailer with a pitchfork and tromp the cotton down so we could get 2 bales on the trailer. Next came the strippers with the basket--dump into a trailer, tromp that down and off to the gin. Modules were after I left the farm. And now this. Fantastic!!!
