Found an 03 kubota BX1500 that a guy is selling by me. It’s in fair shape but is functional nonetheless. It has 1100 hrs on the meter which stopped working last year... so maybe 1500hrs?!? Has an FEL and a 54” belt mower which is a bit on the rough side. It will need a power steering seal kit which he says is all it needs from what he sees. He’s asking $5900 and says it’s firm.. Good deal? Or keep looking?

Also are these tractors pretty capable for the size motor? 15hp seems small for a loader.

My dad has one, it is very capable for its size, great little machine. I even used it to pull my 50in core aerator once, it was weighted down to the max (about 800lbs) and pulled it fine but was maxed out. I usually pull it with my B2620 but was in the middle of a job with the backhoe and needed to do a customer's property.

They mow good, are well built, extremely maneuverable and the loader is sized well to the tractor.

They definitely hold their value well.

If the meter did indeed stop working last year I seriously doubt that 400 hours has been racked up in the meantime. Especially if it's true that the other 1100 hours were accumulated since 2003. That averages out to less than 69 hours per year if you figure 1100 hours divided by 16 years (2003-2019)

Tractors used for residential mowing and landscaping average around sixty engine hours per year, so this seems about right.

I replaced my hydraulic steering cylinder on my bx2200 a couple of years ago and it was about $165 or thereabouts. It takes about an hour or maybe 2 to replace it if you have trouble unscrewing the tie arms (this is a good time to replace the boots if they are busted). I rebuilt it the first time (the kit was about $35) and without the proper tools, which I don't have, it's about a 4 hr messy job. The part that fails is a 25 cent O ring. I have no idea what a new hour meter costs or how much time it would take to replace but you'd like to everything working, especially the steering.

The steering fails because we load too much weight in the bucket and then drive around turning sharply without a proper counterweight. I'm more careful about it since mine has failed twice.

The pricing of the 1500 is, in mho, for a very good condition unit. This one fails in 3 departments: the meter, the steering and the beat up mower deck. As described, I think $5000 is a fair price. You'll probably have $250 in parts alone in it to get it back to good condition.

If the unit was properly cared for with maintenance by the book (oil, filter, and fluid changes), it should be a good long term machine.

Kind of what I was thinking. I know that I'm beginning my 4th season with a John Deere X394 where I mow one, sometimes 2 acres at a time and I'm just approaching 125 hours.
The tractor in question probably does a little more per year due to FEL work. At any rate it's a relatively low hour machine when you consider the years.
