the bucket cylinder on my kubota 1630 loader is leaking when fully extended and I was wondering how difficult is it to replace the seals? I would like to do it myself. I'm very handy and I don't know if it requires any special tools or skills. local dealer and hydraulic shops are asking "at least $100+". Messicks has the kit for around $50. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated or should I bite the bullet and take it to a shop.

It's not very difficult but if it only leaks when fully extended you may want to check the the rod isn't bent. If it is you can take it out and bent it straight.

decided to take it to the dealer after all. They only charged $40 labor for each cylinder and the kit was $60. It's worth having them do it the right way.

after waiting for 2 weeks the dealer told me that one of the cylinder rod's is bent and will need to be replaced at a cost of about $500. They said they wouldn't recommend trying to straighten it out. Are they right? I can't see spending $500 on one cylinder, How difficult is it to fix it? Does anyone have a used one? took the cylinder to a hydraulic specialist here in RI and they also said they don't recommend straightening out the rod. They are going to make me a new rod for about $150.

I've straightened 1/2 doz. of them tractor rods are not nearly as brittle as industrial machines. Regardless now that your having a new one made keep the old one if nothing else they make good pins when you cut them up.

How did you straighten it?

I have a 20 ton press ( a 5 ton hydraulic jack would work ) place it between 2 blocks of wood bend up and press it past center ( past being straight) aprox. 1/4" or so let the pressure of . I keeping pressing and let letting off until it looks straight. Then if you set something up to hold each end eg. 2 blocks of wood with V's cut in it to support each end then set something next to the rod in the center and slowly turn it how close to straight it is will show up. You can use a dial indicator like the do in machine shops to get it within a few thou. but for my tractor I've only done it as described and never had a leak or problem. I've had 2 large rams with very slight bends done it machine shops and watching them decide I could do my own when it came to the tractor. Cylinder repair 030.jpg This is a pic. of 1 I had straightened a few yrs. ago they got it within 5 thou. which is good enough a large industrial ram like this can explode it pushed to far. Hope this info is of benefit to you & I will try and answer any more ? you may have regarding this.
