Hi Guys.

I’m putting together a backhoe and I have a question about an injection pump. I came across a low hour engine from a late model 545D emissionized machine. The manual says the injection timing is 29* BTDC.

I have two injection pumps, one off a 4500 and one off a 445 machine. I do know the injection pump drive gears are different.

If I swap the 445 drive gear injection pump to the newer 545D engine, can I use the older pump? The engines on both the other machines are stuck or I’d turn them over to TDC and look where the flywheel marks are.

Thanks in advance,
Andy

Andy, just saw this post. The answer is no. The 4500 has the same size engine, but standard pistons. The 445 has a smaller engine. The 545D Emissionized has headland pistons. None of these pumps will substitute for the other.

You can try it of course, but I don’t think you will be happy.

You might get the pump numbers and ask the pumpguy on here if he could cobble something together.

Thanks for the reply Tractor Tech, I really appreciate it. For whatever reason I never got an alert. Sorry for this post being so long winded.

I noticed those headland pistons right away and figured they had to do something with the emissions.

Looks like I’m ordering some standard pistons if they’ll work with this head. I haven’t measured the angle of the injector yet. Can you recommend a quality brand piston or source? I’ve come so far with this rebuild to cut corners at this point.

The 545D injection pump mounting holes were set at a different angle. I welded up and relocated the holes for the non-emission pump. I’ll measure how many degrees the injection pump is turned off the patterns I made.

Here’s a smaller standard piston out of a 4400 and the headland piston in my 545D. They’re similar except for the location of the dimple and the radius. Can I machine the headland to match the standard piston? The location will still be off but I can make match the 2-5/16” standard piston divot.

If there’s anyone out there in this situation, I can say without a doubt. NH 4.400” standard pistons are not a replacement for NH headland pistons on a turbocharged machine.

The hole in the tops of the standard pistons are 2-1/2” wide and 3/4” deep. The hole in the headland pistons are 2” wide and 3/4” deep. When I compression tested it…I was only getting 275psi with the standard pistons installed. I swapped them out for the headland pistons and the pressure went to 500psi.

My 2001 545D was an emissionized, turbocharged tractor. I installed a Ford 4500 injection pump & pump drive gear from a non-emissioned tractor and it purrs like a kitten with the turbo. I retarded the pump a few degrees because the timing on the newer machine is 29* BTDC and the older Ford tractors are 26* BTDC.
