Hi I'm looking to replace the roller chain on my 54"snowblower, and was going to buy a chunk of it and make my own chain. It would be alot cheaper than going to John Deere to buy it pre made. Is there any brands out there to stay away from, are some better than others or are all roller chains the same? Any sites that you guys buy from or have had good luck with would be appreciated.... they just predicted a frost for our area this week!!!! Got to get everything ready!:)

Years ago! (60's) I needed a chain for my 1950 Harley. I kept putting master links in it when it would break.
Harley wanted $30. for a new chain, $1.00 for master links.
The chain broke in front of a construction equipment dealer. I went in and ask for a master link. The guy said TWENTY CENTS!!!! I ask about the whole chain and it was $10.00 !!!
At the age of 16 I learned to shop around for parts price.
There are many after market chain suppliers and most of the chain comes from overseas anyway.

G'day Dale there is a huge difference in chain qualities and even in the same brands the have a cheaper version, we use KCM or Tsubaki chains here at work and have found both of them to be an excellent chain in the ag industry the best thing would be is to go to a local bearing/power transmission specialist and see what they recommend, just don't go in there and say I want the cheapest you have for this ask them for the best chain to suit the job.

Diamond, rexnord, link-belt, tsubaki, renold......all have good quality IMO.

I agree that there are different quality levels, even within the same brand. I'd go to a place that supplies the industrial businesses in your area. Fastenal, grainger, motion, msc, etc.

Or you can shop on ebay for the above brands. Dont know about the rest, but when it comes to diamond and tsubaki, some are made in USA, others are not.

A 10' box should be ~$50 on ebay
