Tractor
Massey Ferguson 4708
Hello everyone,

I am having issues with the brake pedals.
The issue presents itself after about 3 hours of the tractor being operated.
Once I press down on the brake pedals to stop, they dont come back up to
their original position.

I feel as if they are lacking backpressure to push them back up, it doesnt feel
as if they get "stuck" or "snag" on anything.

The dealers mechanics have been out to inspect the tractor and resolve the
issues but nothing. They have come and operated the tractor while the tractor
was warm and showing the issue. They have purged the brake lines, calibrated
the brake sensor and adjusted the brakes. NOTHING.

I was hoping to get some help or any feedback to resolve this issue.
The tractor is still under warranty and the master mechanic called me to let me
know they have consulted with the factory and that he should be getting back
with a response in the next week or so.

Thank you all in advance.

Look were the brake shaft enters the transmission housing. There should be a grease fitting there - early units did not have a fitting. Later units did. Rust build up between the shaft and housing would cause the shafts and brakes to not return. If yours has no fitting pull the shaft, clean the rust off, replace the sealing o-ring and apply grease liberally before re-installing.

epyon2K6 --- that is a little bit strange. Certainly Jeep may be on to something and good idea to do what he said. There should be return springs on the brake pedals and hard to picture what might hold them down, especially what on earth would wait until you use the machine 3 hours or so and then act up. Seems weird. Maybe your left/right are latched together and one of the two return springs is broken or loose ?

Might be something out of place or defective w/r to the master cylinder(s)? You did not make clear if both pedals independently refuse to rise back up or if you have them latched together and do not know which (left or right) is sluggish.

Another stray thought: Someone in the high paid legal butt covering department of MF decided a while back that we might hurt ourselves if we really had independent left and right wheel brakes. That feature is of course assumed and taken for granted by everyone who ever operated a farm tractor... but corporations are sometimes advised by counsel to protect us from ourselves. I sound cynical because I am ! This aspect of farm machinery usually results in some outrage that we pay for and then get surprised by. That said, most MF users I know (my experience being mainly with a 2011 MF 2660) have had their dealers defeat the "equalization" connection between the left and right brake fluid circuits. That restores "normal" wheel brakes to the tractor. In your shoes I would at least inquire of the dealer if that MIGHT be causing your problem or not.

With it under warrantee I'd be very sure to keep the monkey politely on the dealer's back on this problem.

You need new brake master cylinders.

You sound very sure jimmy. Why so sure? I mentioned master cylinders too a few days back but aren't return springs and equalization line between right and left brakes also possibilities ?

Not sure what vintage tractor you have - but early units where using DOT 4 brake fluid and later units use petroleum based brake fluids. The 2 fluids are not compatible - if you mix them by adding DOT 4 to a later production tractor the seals in the master cylinders and slave cylinders will swell up.
