Attached is a photo of the timing gear box for the fuel injection pump on my Branson 4220 tractor. As you can see, there's an orange filler cap marked "oil". I looked through the owner's manual and the engine manual, but I see no reference to this oil fill hole. I stuck a finger down the hole, and the oil looks to be common with the crankcase... black looking oil as one sees on a diesel engine. But I wonder why it would have its own filler port if it's using engine oil.

Do any of you know whether I should be checking oil level in this timing gear box? Does it actually use crankcase oil for lube? If it requires its own lube oil, what is the correct quantity and weight?

That's just another fill port for the engine oil. One on top of the valve cover and the other on the timing cover, as seen on the picture.

Most of these engines, Kukje, Kubota, Yanmar, etc, are built to be used on various pieces of equipment, which can have brackets and whatnot blocking one of the fill ports, so they add another one for convenience.

Also, this style of injection pump is actually lubed by the diesel fuel, hence why it's important to have clean fuel without any water or contaminants.
