Bush hog 6163 gear box on 306

Picked up a Bush Hog 306 with 6163 gear box at auction. All seems to be there but in pieces. The horizontal portion of the driveshaft is assembled. The vertical part is in pieces which includes a gear. I first thought it is the gear for the vertical shaft but since it looks just like the gear on the horizontal shaft, which btw is pitted, while this separate gear is not pitted, I wondering if it is was bought to replace the pitted gear on the horizontal shaft. If so, then I would be missing a gear for the vertical shaft. Question: are both gears the same?

It appears they both are the same 17 tooth gear making it 1:1 ratio.
