A friend of mine has a IH2424 industrial tractor with a backhoe on it. All of a sudden he is not able to shift into 2nd or 3rd. He says he can't even find the notch for them.

Any clues as to where to start?

Could he pull the shifter rod to look inside or is there a ball on the end of it that may fall off?

How hard is it to pull the whole cover?

Thanks for any help?

Here is a link to Case/IH online parts book, showing an exploded view of the top cover, and shifting mechanisms. Official Case IH Online Parts Store and Case IH Catalog for Best Parts Search and Best Parts Look Up. Case IH Parts for Case IH Tractors, Case IH Combines, Case IH Tractors, Case IH Manuals, Case IH Parts Could be a detent ball dropped out, letting the shift rail slip.

Shouldn't be that big of a deal to pull the cover, to check it out. Place it in neutral, and remove the bolts. Hardest part should be to get the gasket contact surface to break loose.

Big deal to pull the shiftcover ! Remove horizontal pivotpin and pull gearlever out . Shift all rails to neutral position and reinstall gearlever
Remember that if you pull the shiftcover all the shiftforks came with and to reinstall them is a bummer !

At that pivotpin is c-plugs keeping that pin inplace...for now install a bolt to keep the gearlever inplace till you get those c-plugs again.

Ok. He wants to know where to check the fluid level for the hydraulics also. He found the fill cap but can't find a place to check the level
