I am looking at a IH 254 compact 24hp 4x4 (mitsu.) diesel built in the mid 80's . The only problems seems to be the PTO. You have to push in the clutch to engage it and I feared that when the clutch is applied to stop the unit the PTO will come to a stop too. not "live power" I believe is the term. This would be a bad thing with a snowblower plugging every time I stop. The owner claims the clutch is adjustable to first stop the tractor's trans. then push further down and stop the PTO?? He has adjusted it to no avail...the PTO disengages when the clutch is applied. Numerous local IH/case dealers argue as to whether it is a "two stage" for lack of a better term, clutch some mistakenly claim it is live power!!
Could an owner of this model shed light on what kind of PTO this is and how much it would cost to fix?? If it is half @#$ live power I could live with it, or is the two stage clutch BS??? thanks a lot, I am struggling to find a tractor for a small 20 acre home. I wish I could afford a JD 4xxx or a kubota!!!
