I own a JD 790 compact. I was plowing snow when it suddenly quit and will not start again.

Starter engages and turns the engine over. Seat switch is OK. PTO is off. Fuel in the tank. Fuel is in the bowl (no water).

There was an issue a couple of weeks ago where the battery positive terminal loosened but has been retightened.

There is no raw fuel smell at the exhaust after I turn it over.

JD is useless and the local dealer is worse. Is there the potential for an electrical problem that I am not aware of such as a bad electonics module, etc.? A schematic for this tractor would be very useful.

I don't want to pay $90 for a manual that covers 6 other models that I don't own for the sake of a schematic.

I'm 64 years old, I live in New England (we have been hammered this winter) and shoveling a 200' driveway will put me in my grave. HELP and THANK YOU!!!!

Welcome to TBN:D

First, the JD manuals on the CD's are NOT like that. They are very detailed including a "theory of operation" in each section-well worth the money if you do your own maintenance.

Now, on to your problem...You can try checking for 12v at the fuel shutoff solenoid on the injection pump with the key ON.

Thank you! I will and let you know.

The one, and only time this ever happened to me it was a fuse. The fuses are under one of the engine side panels, I think the RH side. Hope it's something that simple for you.

Be advised that just because you have power at the fuel selonoid doesn't mean that it is working. On my New Holland TN which was operating fine one day and wouldn't start the next morning, the dealer changed out the selonoid. Still no success. Turned out the injector pump had croaked overnight for no appearant reason.

is she making smoke when you try to start?

Have you popped an injector line and looked for a fuel dribble while trying to start?

If the tractor was getting fuel from the injectors there would be white smoke coming from the exhaust after about 5 - 8 seconds of cranking.

seems to me I remember reading about a "thrimister" (sp) type of fuse or some such thing that would keep these green machines from starting. they did not cost very much if I remember right

Good luck

Perhaps a thermistor is what you were thinking of.. I believe I've heard some of the JD's have then somewhere around the bat compartment... though I don't own a new jd.. so can't comment specifically on that..
