Make sure the knotter brake is holding the knotter in home position until the knotter trips

If the home position is set correctly the weight of the needles and carriage will hold the knotters in place against the trip pawl. This is an often overlooked adjustment and accompanying fact. If knotted home is correct, brake tension is far less important than when it is incorrect.

Had the same type of problem with a JD baler. It seems the linkage for the plunger stop was worn to the point that on a side hill, it would swing in enough to stop the plunger. The quick fix was to add a spring to the linkage to take out the slop.
