The collapsed length of the shaft changes by the smaller cut. The working length changes by the total of the cuts.

Larry is right and in this situation it is the collapsed length that is important for getting a shaft attached and usable without binding (collapsed).

He probably decided that it was not worth the time arguing over something so prosto!
