PTO Chipper engagement / disengagement

Why not put it in neutral and let it run free to it stops? PTO brake?
Because my tractors all have electric operated clutches.
The chipper is large (hydraulic feed 8") with a large rotating mass.
Yes, the tractor has an override clutch but I like to not stress it and i like to match the pto speed to the natural deceleration of the chipper flywheel. While i do that i listen for debris in the chipper.

From what I know and have practiced with pro driven device you idle down then push in clutch or disengage then take pto out or off.
