The TA is a wonderful tool when used properly. It is for all practical purposes a clutch. Growing up we had three tractors with TAs: a Super M-TA, a 706 gas, and a 966 diesel. The only one which every had a problem was the 706. That was traced to abuse by the hired help. He jerked it back and slammed it forward. He was told in no uncertain terms how to properly use the TA and when he failed to follow my Father's instructions, he was gone. The TA should be smoothly disengaged and engaged, the same way you would any clutch. I loved the TA. You could slow down at the ends without down shifting or throttling back, then engage the TA once you were straight again. It was also useful in tough going or when cultivating small corn. The ability to slow down without downshifting is what I liked the best.
