I got to attend a dedication of a large scale solar project at Granite Construction today. The output of the six panels is 318KW or about 100 homes worth.
For size comparison, the column supporting the panel is 20' high and the panels are about 40'x100'.
They employ a concentrated solar system which consists of fresnel lenses that concentrate the solar radiation on a PV cell that is about the size of a quarter. This results in an efficiency of 26% versus only about 11% from standard PV cells.
In addition, the concentrated solar is not affected by heat as standard cells are.
This installation will provide about 75% of the asphalt and concrete batch plant energy requirements.
