Wheel Horse 522xi
I have a chance to buy a Toro Wheelhorse 520Xi.

What I know is this (stated by the seller who is the second owner):
Year 1999
Model 520 Xi
Purchased in 1999 for $11K
Add aftermarket FEL with ON/OFF switch for hydraulics
25 HP Kohler Command Engine (annual service and uses only synthetic oil)
Has 44" powerlite snow thrower
Has 44" mower deck
Has rear weights but no chains.

It will cost $500 to $600 to have this unit floated to my home (about 200 mi.)

Owner has only used the FEL and has not, in the three years he has owned it, used the mower or the blower - only the FEL

Can any enthusiast tell me the following:
  • is a25 HP Kohler possible (all the tractor data info indicates 20 HP)
if so, is it a reliable engine?
  • should it have power steering?
  • should the mower and blower be lifted hydraulically?
  • what is a fair price for a unit like this?

Thanks for any info
Bob

Haven't had any comment on my post for help so, based on what I have been able to gleen from other posts and other sites, I took a chance and bought the tractor. Hope to pick it up next week.

A few clarifications on the original specs:
  • Model is a 522Xi
  • 22 HP Kohler Courage Twin - always had synthetic oil
  • 44" mower deck,
  • 44" snowblower,
  • 1/4 yd after market Quickway FEL
  • Rear weight box plus wheel weights

So now I am curious if $2500 is a fair price for this package.

Are there any red flags with this particular model?

Any other "words of wisdom" appreciated.

Thanks
Bob

Hello

I have a 522xi with the quick way loader. It's got about 1000 hours on it and going strong. I've probably put 20 hours on it since purchasing it last year. So far so good.

Sounds like you got a good deal. I wouldn't say that there are any red flags. BUT I'd advise you to remove the rear fender and tunnel cover. Inspect all linkage and tighten everything. My speed control pedal was very sloppy. I found a couple nuts missing and at least half the hardware was loose. It would hardly get to 1/2 speed. Now it's full speed ahead! Also all of my steering linkage was loose as well.

Overall I'm happy with it. The Kohler Commands are known to last 2000+ hours. Just remember its not a 4x4 locking diff machine. It's just an open diff. I run about 500lbs in the weight box and atv tires. Hey it beats the shovel and wheel barrow!!! Good luck
