I tend to agree with the " If they burned you once" concept. I would also consider how the persons attitude was when they returned the equipment damaged and when they agian asked for it. (Makes a huge differance to me.)
I will not be forced to loan "jack trip" if I don't want to for any reason, I will consider all circumstances, but not extorsion. At some point they have to learn, for every action there is a reaction. Of course that goes both way's. I have "step" children and it is a political nightmare sometimes, bottom line you just have to love them any way you can, everyones faults considered. Sometimes "no" is better for the greater good, sometimes "yes" is the way to go. Go with your instincts and feelings. |

I have been loaning my tandem axle 7000lb trailer to a dear friend for years up until last month. He wanted to haul a jeep grand cherokee about 20 miles to the mechanic. He used nylon straps a no no, not enough tongue weight another no no, his tow vehicle was out of inspection a bigger no no and was driving way to fast. He got speed wobbles and before he knew it could not recover. The ending went like this. Hit the bridge peir or embankment, embankment is softter than bridge peir. Nylon straps broke, jeep ended up in bed of truck, which isn't supposed to fit there and tore tongue jack off of the A-frame of trailer. No one was injured and trailer suffered no structural damage but, HE KNOWS BETTER. No it won't be loaned anymore.

Touch situation. I like to help out friends and family, and usualy give them the benifit of taking care of stuff. If it's not sombody that lives close to me, or somebody that I know really well, then I tell them that I want a deposit to make sure all repairs are paid for. If nothing is damaged, then they get all their money back. Funny thing is that nobody ever agrees to this. They are willing to have me trust them, but not willing to trust me with their cash. It's the funniest thing.
I'm also a contractor and have people work for me from time to time. It's part of the job to have them use my tools and equipment. If it gets damaged, I almost expect it to happen. It's just part of getting the job done and making a living. My Dad borrows my stuff all the time. He's getting up there in the years and doesn't even realize when he's broke something. It's just something that I live with. He loaned me his stuff when I was a kid and I admit to not taking care of it like I should have. It's just what you do for family. Eddie

When I was younger, and poorer, I was very reluctant to lend anything to anyone. The only time I loaned my car to anyone, it came back with transmission troubles, but I couldn't say anything since it was the aunt who taught me to drive when I was 11 years old.
But now, I loan almost any of my equipment to any of the family members. However, about the only thing they ever want to borrow is my little pickup truck.![]()

I've loaned out my 16' 7k trailer and my little 4X8 to several friends with only one dent in a fender on the 7k trailer.
I would loan the trailer out since anything on it can be fixed pretty easily barring a full blown accident. |

Since your tags on on the trailer, you will be involved in the lawsuit if they run over somebody, so think about that and then stop by the local tire store and pick up a couple of blown tires that they have removed. Mount them to a couple of spare rims and put them on the trailer. Hide the good ones. When they ask about it, tell them you don't have tires on it, since the guy you loaned it to yesterday blew two of them and brought it home like that. Offer to let them use it if they will dismount the tires, haul them to the tire store, pay for a couple new ones, then bring them home and mount them on the trailer. That much work will make them hestitant, especially if you don't tell them about the tires till they come to pick it up. Have the number to U-haul handy, and make sure U-haul has a trailer for rent actually on the lot.
I loan trailers, and borrow them, but try to return them in better shape than I picked them up in. David from jax

It's a difficult situation being held hostage in your own home. I don't see anything wrong with you paying for the Uhaul trailer and them using it. They go to UHaul with your money, sign on the dotted line, (take responsibility), and get on with life. Nothing wrong with that! That should set the tone, since I would imagine the daughter will probably be making more moves in the future...
You can choose your friends, but not your relatives.

To me, this is easy:
1. How much would a U-Haul have cost you the first time? 2. How much would the U-Haul cost this time. 3. How much is it worth to have peace with your wife? In my home #3 is big enough that we can ignore #1 and #2. If the sum of 1,2 and 3 is enough to fix your truck and trailer just let the stepdaughter have the trailer. Lend her the trailer and explain to your wife that you have decided to go ahead with it out of respect for your relationship. Do not make her feel guilty for it, just say it as a fact. She knows her daughter is irresponsible and is taking advantage of you. But, if you rub her nose in it, she will defend her daughter to the death. My wife is worth more than all the trailers in Illinois to me, and all the trucks there also. You can get your truck & trailer fixed, but it is a lot harder to fix the relationship with your wife & stepdaughter.

I have been there, done that and I will have to do it again. Most anyone with grandkids, will do things they dont really want to do, to save Peace. I cant help what other people say about not lending out the truck and trailer, you got the wife, you got the step daughter, you got the GRANDKIDS, I stay in the same boat as you, with the daughter-in-law and if something upsets the apple cart, then it seems like they have other plans when we want to visit (they are out of state) so we have to call before driving 6hrs. I know there can be a bunch of replies and comments, but as the old saying goes, "you have to walk in my shoes" or something like that, before you can say NO. I am not a pushover, but I hold my temper, for the grandkids sake. Its bad that things have to be that way, but thats life, I guess Good Luck Several thoughts Maybe this boy friend can drive better, than the others As stated, sell the trailer, too bad if it comes to this Is your ins. co. going to cover the truck if it gets badly damaged, might be an out, for you. Get the wife to check on it, instead of you doing it. |
