Hmm, the first link says (talking about Ford) "they want to be the first of the "big 3" to put a diesel in the light duty pickup". That's pretty poor research on their part. I had a 1996 Chevy 1500 with a 6.5 diesel in it and it was great. Ford will have missed being the first by about 14 years!!

Swines---- will all these emmission control standards and the research needed to meet the escalating levels have a bearing on were and who builds these engines. They (Dodge) tells me they have changed their catalyst in their Diesel catalytic converters??? and have reduced engine failure substantially. Is this true or false???? 65 mpg is that on ULSD----HAS anyone in the automotive industry seen a mpg change when they dry out the fuel????

Not to get in a first argument here but do not forget the 80's Toyota truck with a diesel and Dodge had one in the early 80's also I believe in 1/2 tons. I am sure I forgot others and have dates wrong but others will correct me.

Also, Ford had a diesel in a light truck. For a couple of years, you could get a diesel in the Ranger series - so, Ford has had diesel light trucks. Ooh...ooh just to really keep things straight and pile on even more...let's NOT leave out the spiffy VW diesel Rabbit pickup... Last edited by swines; 07-23-2008 at 08:09 PM. |

Yes - they've had to change the catalyst. Ford is expirementing with continually injecting a chemical into the catalytic converter to lower emissions. From the information I've seen, there will be a chemical tank that will have to be refilled at every oil change. The emission standards are counter productive. As you put more and more emphasis on clean air, the mileage goes down, you burn more fuel so the emissions go back up per mile. So, every manufacturer is looking at how they can raise mileage while lowering emissions. I think all of the diesel manufacturers are really having a hard time trying to meet the emissions requirements. Some of this gets beyond silly. Where I live, there are restrictions about the amount of silver than can be discharged into the sewer system. This was an attempt at controlling photo lab discharge, x-ray processor discharge, etc. But, the limit was set so low that there was no piece of test equipment that could measure it. In some cases the water coming out of the tap had more dissolved silver than allowable; so you'd have to clean the water prior to using and discharging it. In fact, if you had amalgam fillings, it was quite possible that just rinsing your mouth and spitting into the sink violated the dissolved silver limits. |

But, again, what's the point? The reference in the Ford press release is to the current generation of trucks... And - who could forget those 6.2 liter pieces of JUNK? I owned one...it was in the shop more than I drove it.... |

A bit off topic, but I saw in Diesel World that Ford will have it's own 4.4L diesel V8 in the 150 for the 2010 model year, followed by the 250 and 350 in 2011, along with their own 6.7L in the 250 and 350 in 2011, after the Navistar contract expires.
