They are great trailers, but all the ones I've seen with powered tail lift are REALLY heavy. Most were running 8500-9500 empty. Fine if I was pulling with a medium duty and looking at a 35-40k GCWR but that's way above what I'm looking for.

It weighed 7380lbs. I didn't think that was bad at all for a 32' gooseneck with hydraulic dove tail, 20,000lb GVWR.

I will bet that what you think needs a CDL, doesn't. Unless you live in CA.

I have a 2011 Moritz 20+5 with a manual beaver tail so I can covert to a straight decked 25 footer. They also have a low profile option to get your deck height down to 33" like mine. Its a stretch but you can high step onto it from the ground! Its rated at 14.5K which gives you plenty of room for a dually to get to stay under your 26k number! They also let you get 7k or 8k axles under it. I had them put a 2" receiver welded inbetween the uprights so i could slide in a 12k winch just in case! I put the dual 600CCA batters in the tool box right below it!

Trailer 7380lbs, your machine 8500lbs,,, that is 15,880lbs. Is truck over 10,000lbs?

I will never go back to a ramp trailer. It is so nice loading and unloading equipment without "eyeballing" the ramps. Or worrying about falling off the ramps.

And that sums it up. Tilt deck or tail, gravity or hydraulic is the way to roll.

    low profile is a plus...

That 8500 on machine is bare machine tires not yet liquid loaded and no implements.

Truck is 8k curb, 10k GVWR.

    Here is what I think.

    1) Trailer 10,000 pounds or less, truck can be 26,000 pounds or less for a total of 36,000 pounds -- no CDL. Same trailer, but truck 26,001 or more---- NEED CDL.

    2) Trailer 10,001 pounds or more, total of truck + trailer (actual or tagged weight) has to be 26,000 or less for no CDL. Same trailer, but total of truck, trailer 26,001 or more --- NEED CDL.

The weights listed are actual weight or tag weight -- which ever is more. So if the actual weight of the trailer is 9900 and the actual weight of the truck is 10,000 but the tag weight is 18,000 trailer and 14,000 truck -- a CDL would still be needed.

Did you win your bet or lose?

OP's original post #1 he stated he was looking to get a trailer in the 17,000 to 18,000 pound (gross) range. The trailers with that capacity are (empty) in the 7-8,000 pound range for a capacity in the 10k area. Trucks that can pull 17-18k will have tagged rating of 10-14k. Take the minimums and that is still OVER 26k with a trailer over 10k --- that would need a CDL. At least here in WI.
