There are a bunch of different state rules and many LEO's

Where and why did you get stopped?

From what I've seen, as long as you dont have a sign on your truck, they don't bother..

That, and just looking safe goes a long way.

I got stopped by a state trooper once. I believe it was 1979 or 1980. I was on my way to the lake with my 15' bass boat and he stopped me because he noticed the trailer license plate had expired. In those days, the state mailed you a notice when your car or truck registration needed to be renewed, but they didn't do that for trailers, and I didn't even know that they didn't send them for trailers.

But in all my years of pulling 2 conventional and one fifth-wheel travel trailer and numerous utility trailers, I've never been stopped.

The two latest ones;

Not locking out the joint on an articulating tractor. Warning only.

Not covering the slow moving vehicle sign. Warning only.

Both in Alberta.

Many, many times. But never when using a small trailer, just semi-trailers. The most annoying was getting stopped crossing from South Dakota into Wyoming on I-90. Just received a warning. The Wyoming trooper was sitting in the middle, probably bored to death because there wasn't much traffic and he was easily seen. He stopped me as soon as I crossed the line because I had oversize load signs on my unit and it wasn't required. In South Dakota if your load extends beyond the end of your trailer more than four feet you must have an oversize sign but in Wyoming it isn't required unless you are longer than 75 feet. My load of poles extended beyond four feet but my total length was much less than 75 feet. Normally I take the first exit and pull my signs because there is a scale about 20 miles into the state and they don't give warnings.

I should have been stopped and ticketed today, Due to my incredible stupidity. I loaded my L3700 TLB on the trailer backwards, chained it down from the hoe to the trailer, set the e brake on the tractor.......answered the phone ....and neglected to chain it down in the front before I drove off. effin stupid! My ride was about 5 miles and the tractor did shift on the way. It had rolled toward the back of the truck and the hoe was about 4" from hitting the tailgate. I can't believe I was so stupid.

Towing a snowmobile trailer through a small town at night on HWY 7 with tail lights semi obscured by snow in a blizzard. Ironically it was one of the most well lit stretches we traveled that evening. I had pulled over because I saw a transport coming up behind us and I didn't want to hold him up. Next vehicle after the transport was the police. I got a warning.
I now use magnetic lights that sit above deck where they are less prone to be obscured and I can also keep an eye on them.
