I disagree. I think the '96-98 were better. Nearly as powerful and are probably the most reliable, rugged light vehicle engine ever.

Also, the 04.5 and 05 engines are very powerful and as reliable as any of the ISB engines were.

Of course we are splitting hairs here...

96 through 2002 were good. The purely mechanical pump was more reliable than the electronic controlled mechanical pump. Once diesels went to the 20,000-30,000psi common rail injectors. More expensive service will be required toward mid to end of engine life.

    '89-98.5 were mechanically injected.
'98.5-02 were the ISB VP44 engines. They were great engines, just let down by unreliable lift pumps and some had the leak prone 53 blocks.

The '94-98 p-pump trucks were the pinnacle of reliability and performance.

The common rail engines, from '03-07, may be more costly to repair, but are at least as reliable as the VP44 trucks.

Have to worry about those 2007 and later diesels. They are going to cost some serious bucks to keep the check engine light off so they can be re-licensed every year. Let alone just to keep them running, making decent power and mileage.

Isn't there some aftermarket lift pumps for those trucks?
I've wondered after using high pressure/high volume intake pumps for gasoline turbo applications. There must be some reason why the lift pump was used on the diesels instead of the electric in tank similar to those used by Grand Nationals, Turbo Pontiac Fire Birds and supercharged Corvettes ?

Accuracy maynot be 100% but thise what I found on the various Cummins used in Dodge pickups through the years. General Motors made a mistake not using the Cummins. Even the Dubuque 300 Series John Deere 359 or 414 turbo Intercooled would have been good.

Yeah, all sorts of aftermarket lift pumps for the common rail Cummins, FASS for one. The 03 and early 04 common rails had the lift pump in the engine bay, but after that it was moved to the tank.
