The perfect mid-sized SUV gets better!
The biggest change for the refreshed Grand Cherokee is a new*turbocharged*3.0-liter V-6*diesel*enginem, named EcoDiesel, which joins the lineup with 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. It brings with it a best-in-class tow rating of 7,400 pounds (matching the HEMI V-8's rating), and a 30 mpg highway rating.

This would be a great entry level engine for a light duty RAM 1500 as well. I feel the auto manufacturers are slowly entering diesels into the market before flooding it once everyone's accepted them and the fuel price goes down. This engine in a 4 door Wrangler would make an awesome rock crawler too!

Hopefully they did their homework. Remember GM's disastrous attempt at diesels in the 80s?

Jeep had a Grand Cherokee with a VM diesel before. This is the same engine with more power.

Also, the Jeep Liberty has had a reliable diesel for years.

I really like the Cherokee. We have a few in the family and only minor issue. Biggest being a rear diff that failed. We just looked at trading in our BMW 335I in early Sept. New baby and the onset of winter were major factors. We had it narrowed down to the Cherokee and a Edge Sport. Both were nice. We took both home for 24 hour test drives. The Edge Sport only averaged 18.5 mpg. We dove it about 200 miles. The Cherokee did 18 but had the Hemi. We drove it about 300 miles.

Now here is the Kicker. The Edge was $45,000 and we had it down to $39,000 with Ford A Plan. My family owns a Jeep/Dodge dealership and the Cherokee was $67,000. The best they could do was $64,000 give or take. Both were nice but not that nice so we still have the BMW.

If a Cherokee loaded up is already $67,000 a Diesel version is going to be $75,000.

The only Grand Cherokee retailing over 60k is the 425hp 6.4l HEMI SRT8 version.
The diesel won't be anywhere near that.

$67k? I'm pretty sure the only Grand Cherokees approaching that kind of money are of the SRT8 variety.

Thats what we test drove. I posted a pic. It was the only one on the 3 lots we checked including the families that we cared for.

You know, I was thinking that I could really go for a diesel Cherokee. But at $75k (or $65k or $55k) ain't no way no how. Oh well...
