I have one of these Curt hitches, and like it so far, but I hate to spend over 50$ for the locking pins they make for it. This thread has me rethinking it...

I use a 50BMG cartridge for the pin. Its tight, so they have to drive it out. You could guess the rest of the story.

Ahh, you guys are running those "fancy" hitches... I can see why they'd be a target. I just got a plain jane. Maybe that's why nobody wants it

Mine is old and well used, so I never thought of it being stolen. Then again so is my wife and no one's tried to get her yet either.

Also didn't know in some areas it was illegal to leave a hitch installed. That's odd, but thanks for the heads up!

Better hope she doesn't read these threads.

Our hitches are a little different in the UK, normally the hitch is bolted to the tow vehicle, but we have vertically adjustable units similar to the one pictured by rockshaft. The sliding unit can be removed, and I have lost one of these in the past, after 15 years of getting away with it. It's is still gutting when you realise you've been robbed.

My 4x4 is a Landrover D90 with a van back, so the cab is open to the cargo area. One arguement for leaving the hitch fitted to the truck is when you think what would happen if you had a crash and the loose hitch jumped up and hit you in the head - don't want to think about it really. You might think that's just dumb to leave such a heavy object loose, but it happens!

I however have a tool locker in the load area for such lethal objects, so that is where it resides when not in use.

So if someone stops properly behind you, and then gets rear ended hard enough to knock him into you, you want to be sure and do the maximum amount of damage to an innocent motorist. That's a really nice attitude to have, isn't it?.

I have a roll on wheelchair carrier that slides in my factory hitch on our Silverado. It tilts up when not in use. It is locked by a pin.
