I said it months ago! The 8-speed HEMI would match or beat the Ecoboost fuel mileage and power while keeping it simple. No turbos, no direct injection, no hybrid batteries, etc...

EPA Ratings:
RAM 1500 4x4 HEMI (395hp/410lb.ft) 8-speed - 15 city / 21 hwy / 17 combined
F150 4x4 Ecoboost (365hp/420lb.ft) 6-speed - 15 city / 21 hwy / 17 combined

RAM 1500 4x2 HEMI (395hp/410lb.ft) 8-speed - yet to be released, will it top the Ford?
F150 4x2 Ecoboost (365hp/420lb.ft) 6-speed - 16 city / 22 hwy / 18 combined

It will be fun to see the fuel mileage while towing. At 8k lbs, I'm guessing it will be RAM (12 mpg) Ford (8 mpg).

Also, makes you wonder if Ford has an 8-speed in the works.

I find it easier with big trucks to meet the city estimate than the highway. Tough to test aero drag on a dyno...
It will be nice to see real world results.

I was hoping it would offset the 5% price difference in midgrade fuel vs. regular.
Anxious to see how it improves 0-60 times towing. It might now be close to the ecoboost.

Ford and GM are going to work together on a 9 and/or 10 speed, maybe.

GM, Ford work on 9-speed, 10-speed transmissions: report | Reuters

Problem is a lot of rumors about all the brands, or things they work on that never come to the public.

Ford was working on a hydraulic energy system with Eaton (?) and the department of energy. They showed it a while ago on an F350, but were looking into it with an F-150. They also were working on a dual injection E85 and regular gas eco-boost engine. To get the most out of even E10 cylinder pressure needs to be increased. This system was to when you could run E85 in one tank and regular up to E10 in a 2nd. The E85 would be direct injection and the E10 port injection. They claimed to show about a 25% increase over a normal eco-boost. If only regular gas was used, boost was reduced. They also had a CVT in the works a 10 years ago for the F-150 and SUV's.

So who knows, they may never make the 10 speed.

But it takes mid grade fuel, and several years newer tech, and an 8 speed, and grill shutters, etc, etc, to still come in below the V6 in Tq. Also, the EPA is retesting the Ram 2wd because it isn't getting the MPGs Ram suggested. I would still count it as a tie with the Ecoboost, for now. But the Ecoboost is in it's third year in F150's, and there are all sorts of rumors about an improved Ecoboost and an imrpoved 5.0L engine from Ford, waitng in the shadows for Ram and GM to catch up.

How can you say the Eco Boost is only getting 8 towing when I did a fair test using identical trailers, same route, same day versus my beloved Titan. It did better than 12 on a 250 mile trip.

Our Eco Boost has nearly 16,500 miles and has averaged 18.5 since new. 4x4 Super Crew with 3.73 gears.

Multi displacement. Like GM's active fuel management system or Honda's variable cylinder management.

The Hemi runs on 4 cylinders in light load conditions.
