So the trailer I bought and posted about in another thread, I have decided to go ahead and re-deck it with white oak rough cut. $315 for the boards.

Now my dilemma...should I re-paint it??

I am leaning towards not painting it. Because it is alot of work to prep properly, and I honestly just dont have the time. And the biggest reason I think I wont, is because I plan on keeping this trailer for many years. And in 3 or 4 years, if I paint it, it wont look much different than if I skipped the painting this time. Now if I was planning on re-selling with in the next year, then yes I would paint, but I dont plan on flipping this trailer.

So what are some opinions?? If I did opt to paint, painting is the easy part. But prepping :mur: It would take a few days and I'd be covered in rust and grit from grinding and wire-wheeling.

Heres some pics

Nice Trailer. Unless you are going to strip it down to steel I wouldn't bother.

Some guys around here like to coat with a mix of tar and tremclad thinned down simply in order to spray it on. Might be an idea.

ifputting non treated lumber on it. I'd go get a 5g pail of black asphalt paint and have at ti with a roller.

paint he boards and the under frame..

a lil messy but superior protection from rust, and rot on the wood.

If you decide to paint ,I think I would see what it would cost to sandblast or, sandblast myself a little at a time and paint bare metal as I blasted. That's alot of work & time to clean by hand

Spray it with some sort of rust preventative like a mix of diesel fuel and new oil and split the difference. Takes about 15 minutes and rust is really slowed down. Garden sprayer.

They make some products that you can spray on and the paint. POR (paint over rust) comes to mind. Don't spray a bunch of other crap on it if you ever want to paint it, it will just make painting in the future tough.

might as well pee on it.

with nothing to fix the thinned oil.. it will just drip off into the ground water I have to drink. :(

the bituminus paint i mentioned would be infinately better and not run off while setting there watching it.

Paint it.

Take a grinder with a wire wheel to it. Prime it with rustoleum rusty metal primer. Then paint it. That is what I did to mine and it looked as bad maybe worse. The paint was non-existent on the runners. It looks as good as the day I did it and that was almost 2 years ago. You can also get a product called rust mort. It is supposed to kill rust. It is $20 a quart and it goes a long way.

I've got a trailer from my dad that is in need of a re deck and painting...
I am thinking about getting the 110# blaster from Harbor Freight and sand blasting it...
It will take some time but I want to do it right and it gives me a reason to wifey for a new thing-a-ma-giggy that she don't know anything about...
In all seriousness I would go the sandblast route if I was gonna paint it...
IMHO your trailer frame looks really good to me from the pictures...
Much better than mine...
