8N will not start??

That's it, the resistor is bad!!
Jump from one side the risistor to the other side and it fired up.

I may still just get the NAPA coil and do away with the resistor.
I can take this new $30 coil back to Auto Zone and get the NAPA coil and have some change left over .

If I get that NAPA coil I will not need a risistor, is that correct?

if you already have a REAL 12v coil you need NO resistor.

if you have a coil that says for use on 12v with a resistor.. ya got a 6v coil.. I HATE companies that do that stuff.

I don't know what yer 30$ coil is.. or what application it fits. I know the IC14SB coil will work with no resistor.

coil resistance is a function of the gauge of the wire and the number of turns ( yep there are other factors.. but for simple english.. that's a good enough answer.. )

OK, I understand what you are saying now when you say a "REAL" 12 volt coil.

The new coil from NAPA even states on the side that "no external resistor is required".

Tractor is fixed and running perfect.

no, then jump from in front of switch ( power side ) to past broken resistor... she start? yes.. then repalce switch and resistor.

no.. then keep following the wires back till you find the bad connection betweenthe battery and start switch..

Now here's some even better advice.

get that coil, and the new switch if needed and you should be set.

new coil costs perhaps 8-10$ more than the resistor.. but is a better deal.. old coil is not oil potted.. new coil is.. that's way better thermal disipation properties.

Good stuff fellows. I have a harry ferguson that I am updating with the 12v system. Knowing about the coil is great.
