Any of you guys just starting out with your new welder, here is a quick and easy way to see if you're ready to start building things. Like trailers, trailer hitches, etc, etc. You'll need a few tools along with your new welder. Grinder, band saw, or torch, Harbor Freight Compact Bender, (part # 38470) works really well. Use the 1 1/2-inch die.
Here is an AWS test plate. You can run this with any process, SMAW, (stick), Mig, or Tig, and in any position.

I ran this test on open root pipe, in the 5-G position, using 6011.

Cut your coupons as per the AWS test plate.

Grind down the welds, and use a sanding pad to smooth the coupons. Place the coupons in the Compact Bender. You'll want a face, and root bend.

Look for any flaws in the weld.

If nothing else this is a very good confidence builder!
