I have a miller 251 mig, when first starting the weld, it spits and splatters for a few seconds, kinda like its out of gas, and then starts welding fine. Everytime you stop and start again it does this. The gas is set right, i've changed the tip and cleaned the nozzle, still no luck. I've had the welder 6 plus years (bought it new) it just started doing this. Its been taken very good care of, i'm the only one who uses it. Anyone know what may be the problem? Thanks.

My first thought would be too much stick out when you first start welding. Then maybe too sharp of a bend in the gun. Or maybe just a touch too much wire speed, or not enough voltage.

I always clip the wire off before every start, about 3/8 inch from the contact tip.

I had a similar problem with my Lincoln. The problem was in the 220 female receptacle. It had a bad connection

I'm not a Miller expert, but try the Millerwelds forum to see if it's a known problem. Nice folks and helpful for more than just Miller machines.
