the smell of space ....... welding fumes !
Astronauts who have gone on spacewalks describe the smell of space as an "acrid aroma of seared steak, hot metal and welding fumes". They can't smell it while t...hey're out there as space suits are (obviously) airtight. But when they return and take off their helmets, this is the odour that greets them.
NASA have actually recreated the aroma for training purposes, and Steven Pearce, a chemist involved in the process has suggested that the metallic aspect of the scent may come from high-energy vibrations of ions.

Re: the smell of space ....... welding fumes !
I always wanted to be an astronaut, and here I've been going into space and didn't know it every time I use the Miller 210 in the garage.

Re: the smell of space ....... welding fumes !
Whatever happened to all those space welding jobs I read about in The Big Book of Rockets as a kid?
I wonder if the smell of space is actually the smell of space suit after being fried by direst radiation from the Sun.That's the problem with trouble.
It always starts out as such fun."

It's the sun's radiation frying farts that causes the smell.
