Will it just leak if it needs rebuild?

Yes, but I had that with mine. I and my friend wound up with a glove of acetylene that ignited....was not fun but no damage done. If in doubt, rebuild it.

The neutral flame is the important part. Too much O2 is "Oxidizing flame" too actl is "Carborizing flame". You light the torch and dial back on O2, then bring it back up until the blue cone is perfect.
Also learn to use it with the gases fairly low rather than on higher than needed. Gas is expensive!!
Always know what is around you too. Many fires and explosions have been caused by poor torch handling.
Don't cut any vessel (barrel, tank, can) that you are not sure what is/was in it.

I always turn the acetylene off first.Turning it off last will cause soot to contaminate the tip.
