I'm in the market for a small portable stick welder and ran across a lightly used max star 140 str. This is mostly for around the house stuff. The seller claims he welds 1/2 without issue. I have no interest in TIG so I'll just be making stick repairs to implements etc. is this a good welder for my intended purposes?

One of the Maxstars won't run 6010. Cant remember which one tho:eek:. If you want to run 6010 may want to check into which one will not run it.

My Maxstar 150STL won't run 6010, but that may just be me.

It's not just you - the maxstar 150 was designed that way - but runs 6011 just fine.

Thanks, Dave. Good to know. For over 40 years the only welder I ever used on the farm was an AC buzz box with 6011 and 6013.
...so I'm kind of new to everything else.

For the farm welding I tend to do I generally use 7018. I'm a novice at welding and most of my work is repairs. I've run a 150 that I borrowed from work and it performed quite well at those tasks.

I had trouble running 6010 with my maxstar 150. Ended up with a ESAB 161 for small work and really like it.

OMG. Does that make me the only one who didn't switch to an ESAB 161????!!

....did I mention that my maxstar is no longer in the shop and an ESAB 161 took it's place? :dance1:

Although I only did it because I had the stick only miller, and replaced it with the stick/tig ESAB.

With 7018 they welded identical.
