I've done a lot of crimps that way too, over the years. But the best (tightest) crimp's need to have a rounded bed for the cable to set in while being crimped.
Thanks Reverser - This looks like a much better design than the one I was looking at. Just placed the order, going to give DIY a try, worst case is it will pull off when I try and spool the cable and I'll be where I am at right now.
Finally received the hammer crimping tool and successfully attached the heavy copper lug to the 3/8" SS wire rope and spooled the cable onto the winch.
The idea and crimper worked well, thanks for the help.
