Drive motor of my mig seems to surge and feed speed vary and I can stop the motor by pinching the wire at the tip with my fingers.

Should I be able to stall the motor so easily?

Thanks

Guessing you have your drive rolls way way too tight. The wheels should slip. On making the motor stop, depends on the feed system but the short answer is no.

Will make sure about drive wheel. Just seems to stall motor much easier than my other welder.

Which welder do you have there?

Lincoln 180HD that is probably 6 years old.

I had much the same problem with my Lincoln WeldPak. The wire feed would surge. Replacing the liner solved the problem, it had a very slight kink in it.

Pretty bullet proof machine. Swap liner and go a couple oversized like an 045 liner. Get you wire tension set so the drive rolls slip instead of stopping the motor and I bet you will be good to go.

A worn contact tip can also do the old "slip and stick", and it takes ten seconds to change.
