ER308L sounds like a solid wire. Does it say flux-core on the roll? Most flux-core will have a T in the designation to identify it as a tubular wire. There are self shielded stainless steel flux-core wires available that don't use any shielding gas but they are crazy expensive! A few years ago I sold some to the military. I remember it was over $600 and the spool was only about 20 pounds. It was an Esab wire but Stoody also has self shielded stainless flux-core. Maybe there is a stainless flux-core that also uses shielding gas?

I have always used shielding gas when using flux cored wire even though they claim you don't need it. I always has lots of porosity with straight FC but not so much by adding some 75/25 Argon/CO2.
