Yanmar sc2400 TLD, 1989 Ford 2120 with loader
Anyone replace the gear oil in the front axel?
Just ticked over 500 and IIRC that was something on the schedule.
Anything to avoid? Tips? Tricks?:D

Nothing that needs to be done immediately. But I intend to do it within the next month or two.

I changed the gear oil this morning at about 530 hours.
I will post pics with some comments later.


One issue has come up.
My owners manual and technical manual both say 2.6qts of 80w90 gear oil.
When I filled the axle it only took about 1.6qts.
I checked the drained oil and it's about 1.5qts give or take.
Other than a misprint, and ideas?

When you drain oil it doesn't all come out, especially heavy 80w90 gear oil. All the gears remain coated with oil. Whether 1 whole quart would remain, I don't know, but that's at least part of it. Some mechanisms like automatic transmissions give a refill quantity and also a "dry" quantity for a new or rebuilt unit.

I agree with your premise, but there is no way nearly 1/2 of the alleged fluid capacity is remaining behind. The oil was surprisingly thin after a good warm up period. I did leave both drains open for at least an hour for this reason.

There's two versions of the 2400. I wonder if the axle changed when they did the rev. If so, that might explain part of it.

Possibly, but the 2450 didn't exist yet when I purchased my 2400.
Yanmar does make a lot rebranded stuff, so who knows. The 2400 is a pretty close clone of the jd 2305.
I do plan on contacting Yanmar at some point.

So, pretty straight forward procedure.
Just like changing the oil.

changed the oil at about 533 hours

The swirls appeared to be very fine metal particles.
It was nothing I could feel, but there was a lot.
I've changed differential oil plenty of times and never saw this.
No major concern on my part. However my manual does not have changing the oil
at 50 hours listed, which I found odd, and against my better judgment I did not.
I would recommend a 50 or 100 hour axle oil change.
I think I will let it go a while and do another change around the end of the summer to try and get some more crap out of the oil.
I do have a lot of 4wd bucket hours on the machine... at least half of the machine hours, so I think changing the oil every 250 is not a bad idea.
It's easy/cheap, and can't hurt.
