Engine knocking aerialhunter(Illinois) 8/6/01 11:53 pm

The knocking didn't sound like it was coming from all 3 cylinders,
just one... Of course I didn't let her run for more than 2-3 seconds
before I shut her down....
Anyway, it doesn't sound good......She only has 1600 hours on
her........... Has anyone heard a diesel <running> that had improper
injection pump timing?
If so, could the knocking sound similar to a rod knock? Just a
<wishful> thought Skip

To change the injection timing , shims have to be added or removed.

Had a tractor knocked like crazy thought it was going to blow, just a
bad injector. I would replace that first!!

Yeah I've limited the bangin' to an injector, thanks to everyone's
help.
Now, I've removed the injector retainer and fuel line and am trying
to figure out if the injector is "pressed in" (not actually pressed
by slid in) or threaded??? How in the heck do you get it out of the
block? Thanks in advance,
Skip

Hi, One method that worked for me on GM generators is to just loosen
the injector retainer but don't remove it. Then crank the engine once
of twice and the compression should loosen the injector. Now just
remove the retainer and take out the injector. Woody

Thanks! What a great idea. I'll try it tomorrow.
Now, who has an injector for a 1989 276D at a reasonable price? Need
one ASAP! COD would be nice too....
Thanks, Skip

Talking to the repair guys at the local Yanmar shop, they tell me
that sometimes the injectors are "glued" into position by caked-on
carbon deposits. They also say that the carbon deposits can make it
hard to get the injector out even when it is loose enough to rotate.
They don't look forward to the job of removing stuck injectors.
Thanks to Dave, I have a list of Yanmar factory tools. The "injector
remover" is nothing more than a handle with a M14 thread on one end.
It is screwed into the fuel line hole and I would guess that it just
gives you the leverage to pull and rotate that injector. good luck
