Is it advisable to fit a fel on a open platform tractor 20hp range? I know later models have done this but would there be fatique and breakage issues with a tractor built mid 1980s. Thanks Dan

My 24hp Yanmar has had a severely oversize loader on it since 1980-81. The loader is so heavy the tractor won't back up a slope if it doesn't have rear ballast, and the rig overall weighs 1,100 lbs more that its advertising brochure says the bare tractor weighs.

The loader (Great Bend, American made) shows weld repairs from ramming things.

No damage at all on the Yanmar.

But I think the secret is that this is a 2wd that was ordered with the optional HD front axle (adjustable width), an axle that is probably standard on Yanmars a few sizes larger.

I think there is only one instance where the loader can cause damage. That is if you have a 4wd and you pick up enough weight that the front tires can't slip. Then you apply a lot of power. These 4x4's are intended to keep moving in a muddy rice paddy, not carry the entire torque of a roaring engine in low/1st gear.

In other words - you can't hurt anything so long as you use reasonable caution.
