I replaced the head on my 2210d. I need to set the rocker arm clearance, Does anyone know the correct procedure? I see 2 marks in the crankshaft pulley. marked 1 and 2 which do i use? Do i need to rotate 180 for the other cylinder?

I kind of do the valve adjustments in a crazy way. I might get flamed here but I usualy turn the tractor over by hand if the radiator is off or turn the key a bit to turn it. I watch the valves go up and down when one is down (open) I adjust the other one that is closed and ready for adjustment, no pressure on it. I do this till all are adjusted. Call me crazy but it seems to work for me with old vw's and tractors at least so far in the last 10 years. tractor only just recently. I figuer no two valves are open at the same time on the same cylinder and that the cam has a good bit of low spots instead of lift.

I don't think anyone is going to "flame" you for adjusting your valves this way. There are a lot of different ways to do things. If it works for you go for it

No one will "flame you", however, it is possible not to be at the best point for adjusting your valves. When your exhaust is closing your intake is opening, so it is possible that both valves can be open a little at the same time. This overlap is what gives drag race car engines that characteristic "lope" at low RPM. If you watch the valves, when the intake closes (BDC), turn the crank forward 180 degrees and you are on compression and power strokes--that is the better place to adjust the valves.

If you want to do it the suggested way, I would recommend adjusting the intake just when the exhaust starts to open and adjust the exhaust when the intake has fully closed.

I like setting the valves with a dial indicator with a mag base. Get a much closer setting than with a feeler gage used on worn surfaces. You can get one cheap from harbor freight that will work good enough. Set mine almost 6 years ago and check every couple of years. Hasn't changed after the first setting. With a dial, you can see the clearance, no feel involved. Is setting the valves that close necessary, most likely not.

No it's not on a low revving diesel. Usually best to do when the engine is overnight cold however some engines have hot specs.

I set of go/no-go feelers is what I like to use.

When I had a race car . I used dial indicator & set when engine was hot.

:D Yep got to be careful with them hydraulic lifters!

Just checked the L manual, everyplace the specs are mentioned, there is a (cold) next to it. It ain't a race car, its a 2500+/- rpm diesel tractor.

:D

They weren't hyd. lifters.:p I know it's a tractor .but, he could still use a dial indicator;) BTW, my drag car was a 2500+/- RPM car:p
