old ford
Hi I live on the big island of Hawaii and manage a couple hundred acres out here. Most of the land is forested but the areas we have developed are mostly planted in Noni (a stinky fruit we make in to juice and sell in health food stores around the world). Im looking for a 20+ hp yanmar w/loader and 4wd, mostly to mow between the rows of noni trees. My old ford is too wide and only 2wd which is usless in alot of areas of the farm. Sactotractor.com responded to my inquiries with a YM2020D at $8200 w/ koyker model 80 loader. Or a YM2210D for the same price. Sooo... is this a reasonable price for the west coast? Shipping will be another $2500-$3000 according to sacto. Has anyone dealt with them before? Are their tractors vn rebuilds? Also can anyone recommend any other west coast dealers who can ship to hawaii? Any thoughts on which models I should look at to run a 5' bush hog, mabey a sprayer for fertilizing and move dirt+mulch around daily, on a real farm.
Thanks
Dave

I don't know much info on sacto tractors. But here is another dealer on the west coast in Oregon, I think.

thanks inspector . The link worked. As to the question? I don't recall anyone here that has dealt with them. As for vn tractors ?? kinda looks like it. you should ask them. If they are honest . They should tell you

I bought my YM 3000 from them a number of years ago when the business was in a different location in Sacramento and a much larger scale. I understand they have scaled down the business somewhat, and moved to another location. The tractors they had at the time were all VN recons, bet that is still the case. Think it is a brother and sister operation, both nice folks. Don't count on them for parts, mine come mostly from Hoye. They provided some minor parts after the sale at no charge, and were good about it. Like any VN recon I had trouble. But for the price, think I got my monies worth. I am a retired machinist and am set up to do all of my own work. Someone who will not be doing their own work should think twice about any VN recon. If in the market again I would do business with them. My yanmar will be brushhogging 10 acres today. For that price and the shipping you aren't that far away from the price of new tractor, might be worth considering.

Thanks for the replies and sorry bout the bad link, forgot the "s". They say, they import directly from japan and repaint in the US, as well as "going through the engine" and replacing seals. Email responses are prompt at least. Thinking about just sticking with our old ford for now though, and getting a good 6ft mower for it. The main reason I wanted the yanmar was for the narrow footprint but I may just bulldoze some of the close rows since they'll probably be too close when mature anyway. No sense suffering for the next 10 years to save a few badly planted trees.

Thinking about Sacto Tractor after my post. There was some talk a year or two about them changing their business model after the many quality problems they had with the recons. They might now be selling imports directly from Japan. Van, the sister in the operation, even made a trip to VN some time back to try to get some better quality out of the " rebuilder " Direct importing could have been the result. The person who might know the story on them is on here as California.

They're good folks. They first worked for a place that was pretty clearly the US branch for a VN 'rebuild' factory. That place folded, I suspect buried under warranty claims. So these two, brother and sister, opened their own shop and started on a new business model.

Sister takes care of marketing. (And she's darned effective!) Brother reconditions grade A- tractors that are straight from Japan, and you can watch the week or so of work he puts into each one. Nearly all cosmetic plus if needed a new seat, muffler, maybe a seal at the pto or fwd etc. I've asked about buying one right off the boat - no. I've asked if they were interested in repainting my US Yanmar. Nope, too old and too rough I was told.

I've bought several implements there, and some of the small stuff I needed to get my Yanmar back to bone-stock condition.

Here's their Craigslist ad. Note they specify 'brought straight from Japan and repainted here'.
classifieds - craigslist

And google on sactotractors will bring up some more ads, plus some stuff I wrote about buying my tiller there.

I don't have any reservations about recommending them.

I should make one thing clear, they are merchants, not a tractor repair shop. During the warranty period they will do anything to assure you got what you paid for. After that you need to find your own local service. For example they swore they gave me the right driveline for my tiller (that was made to fit my model tractor) but it was too short. No problem, they gave me a pto extender (a new one, $20 from TSC) to make sure I was happy. Months later it occurred to me that my Yanmar probably had longer arms put on simultaneous with its oversize tires, so that the driveline not reaching was entirely my problem. But Brother had simply said he was certain he was giving me the right driveline, but here's an extender so you can put the thing in service. That's a good illustration of their no-hassle warranty service.
