Whenever I get my bush hog at the desired cutting level the front corners start picking up dirt and debris and dirt. It leaves a rut on either side. I can raise the cutter to stop it but then it doesn't cut at the level I want. Anybody else ever run into this? BTW I am useing a Clipper 400 cutter.

I already tried moving the top link in and out.

I set my cutter where the front of the cutter is about 5'' or so off the ground. You are rough cutting . To get a closer cut you meed a finishing mower

hi YM2310JC,

Yup, the problem plagued me also, this is what I did. In the picture, the brush cutter is raised off the ground, you see its weight is supported by the springs. The brush cutter truly floats, less vibration and no 2" trenches. Very helpful brush cutting next finish cut areas.

Hardware List:
4 ea - 3/8" shackles
2 ea - 13" lengths of 5/16" chain
2 ea - 3/4" x 1 1/2" pipe nipples
2 ea - 3/4" washers
2 ea - 1/4" qwick links
2 ea - 9/16" nuts (welded to pipe nipples)
2 ea - 1 1/2" x 7 1/2" heavy springs

I'm sure there are many other ways to solve the issue, this works for me. They swap back and forth easily with the factory links when implement used dictates rigid links.

Different brush cutters cut at different heights. The shortest I can cut with my John Deere brush cutter without it dragging on the ground is 4". My Razor brush cutter will cut down to 3" without dragging. You may be able to change the blades for a shorter cut.

I think I may have the same cutter as you. It is an LMC 4'. It is a rotary cutter aka brush hog, bush hog, etc. While it is pretty smooth for a rotary cutter it is still a rough cutter. That occasionally happens to me to. It takes practice to not do that. When I am using it cut grass on uneven ground I constantly adjust the height. It gives your neck quite a work out. Make sure that you have it level. That is your adjustable link arm may need to raised or lowered to get them even. You will not be able to cut as close to the ground as a finish mower.

I am unfamilar with the rotary cutter you have but this may help. On level ground, adjust the the rear wheel to the level you want to cut at. If you have a bracket with holes in it I guess the lowest setting is what you want. Remove the top link and raise the front with the arm lever to level out the cutter. On my tractor there is a stop that can be moved to keep the lever from going down any further. If you do not have one, probably a bolt and wingnut will do. This keeps the front from dipping down too far and digging in. Once this is set adjust the top link. You may need a longer top link as I have to cycle back and forth between two of them with my implements. This has worked pretty well for me but due to the lay of the land on my farm, I still get a pretty good neck work out Sailor has mentioned. On flat areas you should be good to go.
