Maybe someone out there can advise me in this situation. The situation was that the roll pin that holds the yoke on the control shaft of the 3 Pt. The yoke operates the control valve. The roll pin broke and the control lever moved, but did not move the yoke and therefore the valve could not be controlled.

I removed the top of the trans with the control valve and as I was pulling it out it hung up and tilted and the regulator valve slid out and fell into the trans. It is a pin with a short taper on the end. It is about an inch long and 1/4 inch in diameter. The problem is that I cannot find it. I have "fished" with magnets. I even pulled the PTO and searched in that was. However, I cannot find it. I believe that it is down in the right hand side of the final drive gears. I have trided to get it from the drain and fron the PTO cover plate and from the top and I cannot seem to find it anywhere. The drain hole is so very small that it is hard to get anything up in there. I tried a magnet and a bent nail, and think that I hit it a couple of times, but cannot seem to pull it out.

Anyway, does anyone have any good advice? there are not a lot of clearance in there and I would be afraid to just run it. If that valve pin got int the gear oh what a disaster that would be.

All advice graciously accepted. ;)

Just a thought - you might be able to move the pin around by using a suction gun to spray diesel into one side of the case and flush the pin to the opposite side, where you put a magnet (on a string) to capture it.

Or flushing it might at least move the pin to where you can see it.

California, You are right in that I should just try to move the pin to where i can get it with a magnet. Maybe even a blast of air (with a non-OSHA approved air nozzle :) ) would move it to a magnet that was placed appropriately. It is a good idea.

The engineers did not allow much space around that final drive gear so that I so not believe that it will fit between the gear and the bottom of the case. But maybe I can move it even temporarily to a magnet. hmm!!

At least I have a plan for the morning. Thanks.

California's plan sounds good. The only other thing I can think of is maybe to blow some air from an air compressor thru there and maybe it will find the exit point.

...and unless you have an immaculate shop, tarp the transmission before applying air. You could toss the rollpin to a far corner of the shop without realizing, and continue on searching needlessly.

Yep.

Could you jack one side of the tractor up to get the pin to slide or roll to a more open place in the trans where you gan get to it?...Maybe you need a stronger magnet?

Here ya go. I don't see a ROPS in your avatar.

Take off the steering, fenders, seat, and 3-point arms.

Rotate the tractor clear over backwards using a crane or something so you don't crush the hood.

Blow air or diesel into the open transmission.

The pin is sure to fall out! :D

Yep.

Shop??? It is sitting in a clients driveway in the dirt!! and this morning in the rain.:(

:D:D:DI can just see it now dangling like a Christmas tree ornament. Thanks for the humorous note to put a smile on in a frustrating situation.

Thanks guys for all the ideas. It is so tight in there that it almost looks like they molded the casting around the gears and bearings. It is a study of compactness. I think that what i can do is surround the area that I believe it is hiding with magnets and then try to blow some air in there and maybe one of the magnets will grab it. Maybe cover the openings with a rags so that if it escapes brom another place that the rags will keep it localized.

I will let you know.

Probablly a Stupid idea Mike . But if You have a good shop vac & Maybe ductape a smaller hose on the end to see if You can suck it out . Like I said probablly a stupid idea . :D . Best of luck . Bob

Well I was successful!!

cowboy, There is no such thing as a "stupid idea." I do not think that it would have worked. I could not even move it with air. There is not much clearance in any direction. The pin would not fit under the final gear or around either end of the gear. It did fit down behind the gear. I finally decided that it MUST be behind that gear, so I pulled the axle and axle bearing housing. Then my magnet pulled it out first try.

With the axle out I still could not move the gear much, but fishing through the axle hole was immediately successful. I have included pictures of all that I had to do to get that little pin out of its hiding place. The moral of the story is to be VERY careful when you pull out the top with the 3 pt valve body that has the little drop valve speed regulator in the side.

After I got it all back together I had no parts left over, and everything worked so I am in good shape. Thank you for your encouragement and advice.

Mike
