yanmar 186D....JD LT180....DR Brush Cutter
I recently bought a yanmar 186d.....very nice little tractor. I noticed when I throttle up in higher gears.....some smoke is generated. Seems to be fine when running at lower rpm. Smoke isn't bad.....just a little more than I expected. Is this normal. I plan to change oil and filter and air filter is pretty old looking. Any advice?? Also....being new to the tractor world.....should I do any other maintenence immediatley? Everything seems to work well.

Welcome and congrats on the new tractor!!! You probably want to add fuel filter to that list for sure. Since it's a new purchase and you may not know how well it was maintained for added peace of mind you may also want to drain the transmission / hydraulic oil and clean the filter screen (or replace filter on your model??) and drain the front axle and refill. A flush and refill of the radiator may be a good idea also. What color is the smoke? Do you see any bubbles blowing into your coolant reservoir once it has reached operating temperature? Are you loosing coolant and you have to add coolant after you work it? Is the fuel clean and fresh? You may want to add a little Power Service additive to your next few tanks of diesel. Mine smokes only at startup mostly when it's cold but otherwise I don't see any smoke.

Thanks for the reply and advice. I will change out the fluids and filters as you suggest. As for coolent loss......I have none....everything seems to be fine. The smoke is a white/light blue color......seems to be worse when I rev. the motor. When I am moving.......seems to go away. Overall...the tractor seems to perform very well. Also.....forgot to mention.....no bubbles.....looks fine. Thanks again for the input.....very helpful.

Sounds normal to me as long as it's not constant heavy smoke. Some fuel additive like Power Service may help clean up the injectors if they need it. If I missed anything there are some guys on here that will be along shortly I'm sure to correct and advise that know these Yanmars far better than me.

Lube everything that moves. I neglected my lower lift arm pins and almost destroyed my left side axle housing.

Thanks guys for the good advice. I will be following all of it. Question.....my 186d was originally sold in the US. Can anybody tell me what model number is the "grey market" equivalent? Would the parts be the same?? Spent my first day with my tractor today.......lots of fun!! Thanks

YM1510D is said to be similar. I've read that its front axle is completely different, and I don't think YM1510D has the external air cleaner, or the big hydraulic filter in front of the fuel filter. And it doesn't have the 'overrun clutch' (one-way ratchet, actually) inside its PTO. I think the engine, sheet metal, and performance specifications are identical. And the gray market dealers who post here have all the parts you need.

I bought a YM186D last summer and I'm just getting familiar with it, so I cant be much of a resource on these. My YM240 is still my primary tractor, with the YM186D intended for working closer under my orchard trees. (Mowing right up next to the treetrunks etc). I sure hope your YM186D is prettier than mine! Photo of both.

Thanks for the info.......I am impressed with the knowledge out there. Really helpful to a new guy. My 186d is quite nice and recently was painted. Picture attached.....nice tractor. Thanks again for your help.

JerryBob,

I noticed your 186D has a roll bar (ROPS). Can you tell if that was mad for that unit or does it seem to be a custom add-on?

I'm going tomorrow to buy a 186D from the owner of the house w/10 acres we're buying. I've never owned anything more than a lawn mower so this is uncharted territory for me. I appreciate all the info in this forum to get me up to speed...at least 1st gear.

The unit I'm looking at includes at least a brush hog and a blade for which he's asking $5000 for the bundle. I'd like to get the tiller and post hole digger as well. He says the hours meter stopped working so I don't know that number.

Here are some pictures.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Those are some nice tractors there. I considered buying a 186D but got a 169D instead due to the lower price and better condition. The 186D will treat you well for sure. These Yanmars are very reliable tractors. Im not sure if the 186D offered factory ROPS but there are aftermarket companies that make ROPS for reasonable prices. I can say that having ROPS makes you feel a whole lot safer, especially with a Loader or using the tractor on hills. Good luck to you both. Those 186D's will treat you well.
