I got around to changing my tranny fluid today and to check the screen that lives under the 3 bolt plate. I looked at the color of the new tranny fluid and realized that the old fluid is almost white in color, and it kinda has me spooked. I dont know if water got into it or if someone put the wrong kinda fluid in it or what. What do you guys think this is?

I would say that there definitely is water in that oil. Do you have any idea how long its been since the oil was changed?

Sure seems like water got in there. I had a similar problem when I bought my 186D. I had a bad (cracked) filler cap which allowed water to get in. Recommend you drain it all, clean screen, replace filter and fill with JD303. You can also use Dextron 3 ATF if you can't get the JD303. I've used the ATF with no problem....so have many others. Good luck.......

Replace what filter? This isnt motor oil by the way, this is tranny/hydraulic fluid tank.

I dont think the previous owner did any maintenance on this old gal the whole 5 years he had it.

The screen under the 3-bolt panel on the bottom is destroyed. Is it bad to run the tractor without the screen until a new one arrives? I would like to fill it back up with fluid for the time being. I guess I will be ordering some parts soon.

I wouldn't run it with out the strainer

What does it do? By design. I cant see how it actually removes particles from the fluid.

Here is Hoye's diagram.

The outer surface of the 'strainer' (Yanmar's name for it) faces the transmission sump. Then on the forward 1/4 of the filter assembly, there is a shoulder and an O-ring that separate the sump from a little cavity at the front of the transmission where the pump intake line is attached. The large holes in the filter assembly forward of that O-ring let fluid pass from the clean inner side of the filter over into to the pump pickup cavity.
